Description

Frank Bauer’s photographs form the basis of his paintings and are his subject matter and starting point for his paintings. He is particularly interested in snapshots of everyday life and situational shots with and without people. Frank Bauer is not interested in capturing a perfect moment or in technically perfect photography, but his still lifes fascinate above all through the serious depiction of the everyday, the reality that surrounds him and others at that moment and which he captures.

His pictures often radiate something forlorn, enraptured and even slightly melancholy. Bauer is a contemporary witness to his world and by painting his photos, which he always photographs himself, he gives them and the seemingly fleeting everyday moment meaning.

And even if his pictures have a lot in common with photorealism, they are nevertheless an abstraction of the real, as they reduce perception to the visible. Bauer himself repeatedly emphasizes “the inspirational potential of the photographs, especially when they are blurred, underexposed or undeveloped. Sometimes such photographs go beyond the scope of what can be painted and lead to the surprising realization that not all visible colors in a photograph can be mixed or reproduced with oil paints.” (Excerpt from the Rheinische Art – Kulturmagazin online).
