POINT OF VIEW

The question of the representability and reproduction of visible reality has driven mankind, and artists in particular, for centuries. Frank Bauer, Rómulo Celdrán, Teresa Riba and Kai-Uwe Schulte-Bunert also explore this question in our group exhibition “Point of View”. In the Renaissance, one would perhaps speak of a paragone (Latin for comparison), the so-called contest of the arts, in which the ranking of the arts was at stake, with painting and sculpture in particular competing directly. However, the invention of photography in particular changed the standards and possibilities for depicting reality. Moreover, in contemporary art, the boundaries between genres overlap much more and are being softened, so that the concept of the classical paragone appears obsolete and needs to be reconsidered. Nevertheless, the question of the possibilities of artistic modes of depicting reality still leads to significant and important insights today, and different genres also overlap with one another and adopt ideas, techniques and principles from other art forms.
