Description

“The focus of my artistic work is on exploring the material of oil paint. My works oscillate between abstraction and figuration, between figuration and materiality.

Parallel to my representationally accentuated way of working in oil on canvas, object and installation, I am currently concentrating more on creating works on paper. This way of working has its origins in my architectural painting and is dedicated, in an even more reduced form, to the pure materiality of oil paint and its medium.

Since the middle of last year, I have been working on a series of painterly drawings entitled “stripes”.

This new series is a series of small-format sheets that were created as a continuation of previous works on paper (see catalogue: “Grau”, from p.76 / see catalogue: “Ombrage”, from p.52). The works are characterised by a minimalist, painterly approach to the medium of paper and her particular technical approach.

The current sheets show simple, geometric basic shapes that are staged in the centre of the format. However, it is not primarily about what can be seen, but rather about how what has been created appears!

Circles, squares and triangles, in a number of variations, are not painted or drawn in the conventional sense, but rather are squeegeed out with oil paint through elaborate procedures of masking and layering. The coloured lines literally stand slightly raised and haptic on the smooth paper ground and imprint themselves into it. The oil of the paint soaks into the absorbent paper and thus continues to autonomously draw itself into the pictorial space over the days.

It is precisely this symbiosis of pictorial space and colour, which leads to great material density and colouristic intensity and constantly brings new aspects to light, that currently has my full attention.

The reduction in painting, the tightrope walk between figuration and abstraction are also fixed constants – as in my other works.”
