Description

Blerta Hashani is an emerging artist from Kosovo whose work is shaped by the landscapes and rural life of her origins. Working across painting, drawing, and photography, she develops a poetic visual language that combines figurative motifs such as animals, plants, and everyday objects with abstract, intuitive forms. Central themes in her work include memory, place, and belonging.

After completing her studies at the Faculty of Arts in Pristina (2015–2020), Hashani established an independent artistic position with predominantly small-scale, intimate paintings. These are characterized by a reduced yet atmospherically dense visual world in which simple motifs unfold a quiet, almost ritualistic effect.

Her practice received important impulses through international residencies in Sweden and Switzerland (2024), where she deepened her engagement with site-specific work and collective processes. Her first publication, A Story upon the Green, documents a work in public space and underscores her interest in the connection between landscape and history.

Hashani’s works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Kosovo and internationally, including in Pristina, Peja, Bern, Paris, and Bonn. Earlier presentations, such as her participation in Manifesta 14 (2022), as well as recent exhibitions in renowned institutions and galleries, have solidified her position within contemporary painting.

Gaining increasing international recognition, Hashani was included in Art Basel’s list of “10 Newcomers to Discover.” Her work exemplifies a new generation of painters who are advancing the medium through sensitive, reduced, yet highly evocative visual worlds.
