Description

In Ana Pusica’s work, the action of painting is fundamental. It is the moment in which physical impulses and the visual imagination are united on the canvas. It is the creative act itself that is determinative.

The paintings are an expression of Pusica’s subjectivity. They reflect the poetry of her inner world, as an amalgamation of memories, ideas and quotations from her favorite authors. The hand movement is as important as the subject, as the impulses for this physical movement reveal the embodiment of her thoughts.

Ana Pusica’s art is a physical act, direct, intuitive and out of movement. There is a lot of energy in it, which is why she mainly works on large formats. She also needs this space in order to accommodate this concentrated power and fit it into the frame. “I try to create a new and interesting surface from a combination of different techniques, using a lot of different movements, gestures and coincidences.” The mixture of surfaces and layers ultimately creates something like a figurative image.

The idea behind the work is to develop a dynamic and materiality through color. Sometimes the surfaces are heavily worked, sometimes expressively fluid or they are extravagant drops of color. The paintings are not abstract, but neither are they strictly figurative. Although no identifiable portrait is depicted, the pictures evoke a variety of associations: red hot magma, bold pink and orange or cloudy color spectrums. As a result, the pictures radiate an intense brightness.

“Ana Pusica’s oeuvre is characterized by bright colors and strong, expressive gestures on large formats that demand her intense physical involvement. In this way, she is present as a subject in her work not only on an intellectual and emotional level, but also on a physical one. Her predominantly abstract, oversized figurations are to a certain extent self-portraits of a strong artist whose visual language is self-dialogical, spatial and almost monumental.”
