My father, a pastor, took me to the movies when I was 12 years old. Seeing the opening scene of Luc Besson’s movie The Fifth Element (1997) had a profound effect on me. Two archaeologists stumble upon a world-changing find in a desert and are surprised by aliens who promise to return in 300 years. The fantastical conception of this film has influenced my work in many ways and ignited in me a desire for all things visionary.
Through drawing, I study life around and within me. Sketchbooks form a constant archive of impressions for me, ranging from the poetic to the humorous to the whimsical. Nowadays, almost all experiences are influenced by the internet and the resulting digital space, which increasingly define and manipulate our reality. This space and my everyday observations form a connection. In my artistic work, I try to work out narrative potentials as patterns using a subjective visual language. I visualize these as quasi-poetic image quanta.
Beginning as quick drawings, they are transformed into independent works using analog & digitally informed processes. I draw, print, scan, edit and mix analog substances (mainly sketches, but also photos, text fragments, quotes) with artificially generated images (computerized templates, digital edits, renderings). With these creations I want to incubate the auratic qualities of a digitally influenced reality.
For me, the finished works are time capsules. As artifacts of the present, they draw on the wealth of my experiences and observations: From media consumption, conversations, diary entries to literary fragments & dreams, they condense into a stream of inner and outer perceptions about life in the 21st century.
