Description

Tabata von der Locht (born 1996 in Munich) lives and works in Munich. From 2016 to 2025, she studied Fine Art at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich (AdBK), initially in the sculpture class of Hermann Pitz and later in the painting class of Schirin Kretschmann, where she was appointed Meisterschülerin (master student). Prior to this, she completed vocational training as well as the master craftsman program in wood sculpture in Munich.

Her works have been presented in numerous exhibitions, including at Galerie Burster, the Augsburg Kunstverein, Galerie Judith Andreae, the PEAC Collection, the BMW Foundation, and the Lindau Biennale.

She has received several awards and scholarships, including the Debütantenförderung (2025), a scholarship from the Bernhard Borst Foundation (2022), the Danner Art Prize (2018), as well as nominations for the Karl & Faber Prize and Academy Positions Berlin (both 2022).

Tabata von der Locht develops an independent artistic practice at the intersection of painting, textile, and installation. The starting point of her work lies in inconspicuous traces of the urban environment—such as chewing gum residues, graffiti, poster fragments, or markings—which she removes directly from surfaces using a technique she has developed herself and transfers into her works.

In the studio, these collected fragments are further processed, combined, and transformed into textile collages. The result is multilayered works that oscillate between abstraction and documentation.

Her works reveal hidden stories and open up new perspectives on everyday surroundings. By transferring urban traces into the exhibition space, she creates poetic visual environments that connect memory, encounter, and materiality.
