Stella Polaris Ulloriarsuaq is an international photographic art and film project that has captured the disappearing ice of Greenland with breathtaking photographs and film footage.
With extraordinary images taken during the polar night, the project raises awareness of the fragility of this icy world.
The project’s first light expedition started in November 2012 and was followed by another in February 2013, in which they literally “photographed”, i.e. “painted with light”, together with the inhabitants of Greenland. The project team consists of Nomi Baumgartl (photographer and initiator), Sven Nieder (photographer), Yatri N. Niehaus (film director) and Laali Lyberth (Greenland coordinator).
Through the medium of art photography, messages of light were sent out into the world as the inhabitants illuminated icebergs and glaciers at night with high-power LED lamps. Long exposures under the northern lights in the sky produced photographic works of art of these light paintings and extremely impressive film footage of the project and its light ambassadors. At -40° Celsius at times, people and technology had to push themselves to their limits.
Since 2014, the uniqueness of the resulting images and the message of Stella Polaris* Ulloriarsuaqin has been carried around the world with a photo book, international exhibitions and a documentary film, supported by well-known personalities such as Ingo Maurer, Seal, Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Auma Obama.
The Stella Polaris project was presented at the renowned Leica Gallery in Los Angeles from December 2014 to January 2015.
Galerie Filser & Gräf is now pleased to present this unique project for the first time in Munich with an exhibition to raise awareness of the fragility of this icy world and to build an awareness-raising bridge between art and the culture of our global society in the face of rapidly advancing climate change.
