Sebastian Herzau – “Poträt & Stillleben…und Batman”

Sebastian Herzau is a painter whose art cannot be pigeonholed, as he surprises us with a wide variety of subjects and skillfully plays with our perception. He has managed to make this play with the painterly possibilities of alienation, concealment and illusion his trademark.

Sebastian Herzau is always on the lookout for new challenges in classical painting techniques. He mainly devotes himself to the traditional genres of portraits and still lifes, which he translates into his own artistic signature. He creates illusions in the sense of trompe-l’œil painting and ambiguous pictorial worlds that reveal his experimental curiosity. He often adds a special touch of “Herzau humor” to these, which makes the viewer smile and marvel at the same time.

In this context, the motif of the Batman mask, which he has repeatedly painted for years, should not be missing from the solo exhibition – the heroic figure of his youth and the epitome of mystery and concealment.

Or to put it simply in Batman’s words: “I wear a mask. And that mask, it’s not to hide who I am, but to create what I am.” – This also applies wonderfully to Sebastian Herzau and his painting.

He was awarded the Halle Art Prize in 2019.
