hb lankowitz »Endstation Sehnsucht«

According to the Grimm dictionary, longing is “a high degree of intense and often painful desire for something, especially when one has no hope of attaining what is desired, or when the attainment is uncertain, still distant.” (Grimm & Grimm, 1854/1984). Even today, this ambivalent feeling of longing is still partly linked to romantic ideas, which at the same time have an inherent reference to suffering.

In the current exhibition, the artists’ collective hb lankowitz (Brigitta Reuter and Hubert Hasler) takes a step back from the present day to explore the motif of longing. However, their photographic investigations reject any kind of transfiguring romanticism. Instead, they open up views of the “end stations” of longing, of peripheral places and conditions in our society that mirror failed desires. In doing so, they renounce pure documentarism, go beyond recognition and open up subjective views.
