Fahar Al-Salih’s artistic career is not a classic one. Born in Belgrade and raised in Kuwait, a basic artistic education at school or university was unthinkable. Art only found him in adulthood, when he was already living in Europe and pursuing a different life. The determination and fearlessness with which Fahar paints his pictures reveals this biography and the decision to dedicate his life exclusively to art. Rarely are works as close to their creators as Al-Salih’s. In their expressiveness and formal strength, they open up to the viewer and allow a personal and individual
personal and individual access to their history and the feelings they convey. In addition to painting, his oeuvre of over 1000 works also consists of more experimental forms, such as his sponge paintings, as well as sculptures and photography. Al-Salih’s energetic, consistent signature remains unmistakable in every spectrum of his work.
As different as the individual branches of his artistic work may initially appear, the artist’s examination of his roots runs as a common thread through his work. In his paintings, he repeatedly addresses the question of “shelter” – protection and security – with formal force, while the colorful, straightforward sponge mosaics playfully take up and reinterpret the artisanal traditions of the Middle East. With the latest combinations of his sponge sculptures, which make an obvious reference to the bombed-out cities of the war zones, and his much quieter, almost melancholy photographs, he not only closes a circle in his work, but also in an aesthetic and deeply personal reflection on home, struggle and hope.
